King Tamar was the most important king in Georgia. She (yes she) was the first woman to rule Georgia in her own right and presided over the “Golden age” of the medieval Georgian monarchy.

We take a bus to Tskhneti and immediately get into a 7 km singletrack downhill twisting through dense forest to the village of Akhal Daba. A challenging downhill on stony singletrack opens up to a beautiful mountain gorge and the Vere River.

He we visit the Monastery Bettania, and take a rest on the grassy meadow below. The Georgian’s say you will feel revitalised resting at this sacred religious place. Legend has it that King Tamar had a vision to build a church there in a dream but when the workers started building and fell asleep one night, God decided they had got the wrong place and moved the church to it’s rightful location.

Finally a short bike hike takes us back up to the road and back to Tbilisi.
